Information about Scoring

Benchmark Scores

The SAT issues Benchmark Scores.  Meeting the benchmark DOES NOT mean that the student has met the benchmark for the test, grade, or subject.  Meeting the benchmark is an indicator that if the student continues to progress at this pace, the student has a 70% chance of passing a first-year college class with a grade of C or higher.

Therefore, Benchmark scores should NOT be misinterpreted to indicate that a student has learned the material appropriate to their grade level.  Nor should the Benchmark scores be used to identify successful teaching/learning of a topic.  Nor should the Benchmark scores be interpreted to indicate the overall school is successful.

Students, teachers, and schools should be evaluated on year to year growth.

Meeting the Benchmark Score ONLY means that the student is progressing to being ready for college by their senior year.

SAT and Grade equivalents

SAT scores do not officially equal school letter grades, but approximate grade equivalents map high scores to A's, average scores to B's and C's, and low scores to failing marks. [1]

Score-to-Grade Estimates

  • 1400–1600 (A+ Equivalent): Numerical grades roughly 97%–100%; elite performance showing deep mastery.

  • 1100–1390 (A– to A Equivalent): Numerical grades roughly 90%–96%; strong college-ready work.

  • 900–1090 (B– to B+ Equivalent): Numerical grades roughly 80%–89%; solid performance near or slightly above average national norms.

  • 700–890 (C– to C+ Equivalent): Numerical grades roughly 70%–79%; basic minimum competency.

  • Under 700 (D or F Equivalent): Numerical grades below 70%; well below standard high school proficiency. [1, 2]

Key Context

  • No Official Scale: The College Board scores tests on a 400–1600 scale and uses percentiles rather than GPA equivalents because grading standards vary heavily between high schools.

  • National Averages: An average total score is around 1050 (roughly a B-/C+ grade equivalent, resting near the 50th percentile). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
